Stay Home Dad for a Week: Part 1 – Aviation Museum

Monday, December 6th, 2010

With the birth of Oliver we decided it would be best for me to take the week off from work following Karli’s mom’s visit so I can take care of the kids. I was looking forward to this time to spend with them and let Karli just focus on her recovery and Oliver. Having a newborn in the family made me realize how great it is to have older kids (even if they’re only 3 and 5) because they interact with you.

The first day Mylie did not have school and I had passes to the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville so I took the opportunity to take the 2 kids again. This is the museum where Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose lives. Going during the day on a Monday was the best idea ever because it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. I even did not have to stand in line for the flight simulators where normally I would have to shoo off the kids who would cut in front of me just because I was an adult. This museum is quite cool and they keep adding on to it. They even have a water park opening in the summer of 2011 that has a 747 on top of the building with water slides inside.

It was so cute; Mylie brought a notebook and pen so she could write down things she saw. Items were “sheep”, “large plane”, and “signs”. She also was very excited to drive through the “country” since we had to go through some rural parts to get to McMinnville.

The kids did amazingly well and the hardest part was trying to get them to move on through the museum instead of sitting in the airplane chairs. Throughout the museum they have airplane chairs provided for patrons to watch their videos. They were fascinated with the seat belts and especially the fold-out tray. Nolan got upset with me when I tried helping him open it.

We Thought We Could Dance

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

For one last hurrah before the baby comes, Nick and I were able to get away for a kidless weekend excursion to Seattle. We are big fans of the reality show, So You Think You Can Dance, and although the tour was scheduled to come to Portland, the performance was on a Sunday. So instead, we hit the Tacoma performance the day before on Saturday! It gave us a wonderful excuse to get away on a much needed vacation.

The Cast of SYTYCD

Our two all-time favorites from the show - Kathryn & Russell

Um, coolest move ever!

More of Kathryn because we love her

It turns out, seeing the dancers live, though a lot of fun, wasn’t a whole lot different than just watching the Season Finale live. And it was a little creepy watching all the 30-something women around us screaming like teenagers for the 18 year-old boys. Nevertheless, we had a good time.

The best time of the weekend, though, was getting together with friends. We were able to stay with our good friend Katie and Zach, and had lots of fun catching up with them. We were also able to go out to dinner with other friends, and those things were what made the weekend really special. Especially when I realized how much harder it will be to get away with 3 kids.

Makin’ Camp

Monday, September 6th, 2010

For our one last summer hurrah, we joined my family in Southern Oregon for a little camping over Labor Day. Whoever came up with the idea of going camping over Labor Day after a 5 hour drive (which ended up to be more like 8…) down to Southern Oregon should be fired. Oh right, that was me. Ahhh well.

Once we FINALLY got the car loaded, and FINALLY picked up Nick from work, and FINALLY worked our way through holiday weekend traffic, and FINALLY found our way to the campsite by about 9:30pm and FINALLY got the tent set up and everyone to sleep for the night… it actually ended up being a very fun weekend. We had a great location, backed right up to the park’s playground and fountain, we had front-row seats each night for the campground entertainment, we got to entertain some family visitors from the area during the days, we had LOTS of fun with Dip-Sticks (best ever water-shooting toys) and Frisbees, and even managed an excursion to the Fish Hatchery and the Reservoir for some (somewhat chilly) swimming. I’d say we’d do it again in a heartbeat… except next time maybe a little closer to home, and perhaps not on a holiday weekend.

This is Nolan, after discovering the magic of Dip-Sticks, and promptly soaking himself with them.

Probably trying to get someone else to douse him with a Dip-Stick

There's something about Uncle Cody's hat that just requires funny faces

Or maybe it's just genetics...

Yeah... must be the genes.

Mylie earned her Junior Ranger badge from the Forest Rangers while we were there

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for fish hatcheries, and was excited to be able to share the wonderment with my children

Trying to scrape more fish food off the ground to feed to the fish after our quarters ran out

There is little joy in this world that compares to watching a fish feeding frenzy

Europe: A Synopis

Monday, June 14th, 2010

As most of you know, Nick and I had our first European adventure for 10 days at the beginning of May…. which explains the lack of posts until now. Between Easter and the end of April we were focused primarily on preparing to leave… and watching volcano reports.

Luckily, we did manage to make it out and back in between eruptions and ash clouds, and were better for it. Our flights both directions were canceled, but Iceland Air moved us over to British Airways, affording us direct flights between Seattle and London. It shortened our travel time by a few hours, which was great!

Our kiddos were able to spend some quality time with Nana and Papa Winters, which is a rare treat, and they were spoiled rotten, with trips to Chuck E Cheese and a back yard complete with donkeys to entertain them. And in the process, they learned to appreciate dear ol’ Mom and Dad a little bit more. Oh, yeah, and we missed them too.

So with out further ado, here’s the quick and dirty version of our trip. We have about 420 more pictures that we will be compiling into a book of our trip, so for those of you who care… you can come see it anytime. For now, we picked our top 38. The photos below are just thumbnails… you’ll have to click on them to see the full picture.

After seeing the changing of the guard, we had to hustle back to the train station to collect our luggage and then zoom over to the metro to take the hour-long Tube ride to the airport. We sweated bullets worrying that we wouldn’t make it in time, but somehow we managed to get there just as boarding was starting. Perfect! We had to wait to take off because the Ash Cloud was forcing all air traffic onto one runway, and then we  had to head out to the east, and skirt around the volcano to the north. It felt like we were being chased out by ash, kind of like Jeff Goldblum and the T-Rex on Jurassic Park. But we made it, and have LOTS of chocolate to show for it. We had a great time seeing what few sights we got to see, but generally had the best time just hanging out with our friends in Belgium, getting a true (albeit small) taste of what life is like over there. One thing is for sure, we got the travel bug, and hope to be doing much more of it in the future!

And the Answer Is…

BELGIUM!

We’ve booked our tickets and will be heading out mid-spring to visit our good friends who have lived there for the past two years. We’ll be making a couple stops off in London and Paris too, and anywhere else our gracious hosts tell us we must see. For a girl who’s entire international experience can be described as… Vancouver, B.C…. this is an exciting and welcome chance of a lifetime!

Where in the World?

…are Nick and Karli going on vacation? We just booked tickets to here:

Can you guess?
