But mostly my inner poet is drowned out by the noise of “stop touching the baby!”, “go brush your hair!”, “she/he touched me!”, “she’s looking at me!”. Can we make a poem out of that?

Love it! I personally love Mother’s Day, but I have heard that others don’t. I love to have my family appreciate the little things and they try hard to on that day. Let’s face it…I am trying my hardest every day and night (most of the time) and I want to be appreciated on the one day, OK, maybe only partial day that I get once a year.
I don’t look at the good things said about other moms and feel bad, only motivated to do better because I am doing the best I can already and need time to improve myself…..luckily I have an eternity to get there:)

I love that picture bouquet… awesome! What a fabulous Mother’s Day you had. My mom hated Mother’s Day… I remember!! It is hard to not feel like lacking on days like that. But we do need to give ourselves a break and try and feel good about our efforts for at least that day.

I’m with Rachel. It’s funny. London choreographs her own dances too! I’m sure you knew that already. And everything else you said is so London. Maybe you and I are too much alike! Oh, one difference though. London would NEVER run upstairs to get something by herself. She is terrified of being alone.

What an awesome post, Karli! I feel the exact same way about Annika. We butt heads daily and she sure knows how to push my buttons. She doesn’t listen to me or obey and gets distracted when I’m trying to talk to her. She’s very stubborn and tells me “no” all the time. Your post has reminded me to focus more on her positives…because she has so many. It’s amazing how much Mylie and Annika are alike. =)

I haven’t replied to this post for a long time because I wanted to think about it. I can’t say anything to make it better, funny, or well…better. I still have nothing profound but wanted to let you know we think about, pray about, and worry about all of you.

And really you are all blessed. You and Nick are blessed to be given such a beautiful boy. Blessed that it was discovered so young and you can be proactive in his treatment. Nolan is blessed to be given such wonderful parents and siblings who cherish and love him.

Thats my story and now I’m done.

Ever since I read this post (likely soon after you put it up) I have been thinking of ways to respond. I don’t really have anything to say, except that I love you guys! There was a guy I knew in high school who died of this same disease, except they had no idea he had it until it was too late. He was a figure skater his whole life and one day during PE, he collapsed. I’m sure if his parents knew, they would have steered him in other directions, but as it was, he lived to be a very athletic junior in high school. I suppose this just means that Nolan can still live a relatively long, healthy life, especially since you know and you won’t put undue stress on his heart. But my heart still aches for you.

I’m sorry Karli. We had to take Sofia in for an Echo a month ago, and luckily everything was fine. Good thing that Nolan has such a talented mom to expose him to many different activities besides competitive sports. I can so understand how this would make your heart ache,but I bet that little guy is going to do amazing things with his life!

I’m so sorry for that not-so-great news. I think you are spot on with your feelings of mourning and also gratitude. Life is so precious. I remember the loss I felt when I first learned Travis had Autism. It certainly felt like a lot of dreams had been lost. But that’s where we were wrong. Dreams just end up being different and bring about blessings we couldn’t have otherwise imagined. It all works out for our GOOD. It helps us appreciate things in life that we may not have before. Thanks for sharing this, Karli and our prayers are with you guys.

Karli,
WOW! What you must be going through, I am so sorry. Chris has had some similar emotional responses and still goes through the “grieving” process each time she sees a new doctor or looks at “normal” children Nathan’s age.
You ARE lucky that you have the understanding of the gospel and of God’s plan. You have always been strong, but even stronger because of your faith. How lucky Nolan is, to have a mother like you who will be a staunch advocate for him and his needs, who is intelligent enough to understand all the aspects of this disease, and who loves him so much that you will be able to see him through the hard times and show him how to appreciate the good!
My advice…..go through the emotion you have in the second-to-last paragraph, accept this “grieving” as part of your life. Then, LIVE the last paragraph, always.
I know that your lives will be blessed, because of the strong woman you are, whose life is anchored in the gospel. Take care! Love you!

Thanks for posting that Karli! That is the best picture I have seen of him also. It is the only one I have been able to really see what he looks like. He looks a lot like Nolan I think and from your description acts a lot like him when he was a baby. The fact that he does not like to go naked does not come from his Grandma Winters side that is for sure. Sounds like you and Nick get your fair share of the kids who like to either smile big or cry big! Sure can’t wait to meet him!

I will be writing a post about bowling in the near future. Of course I will. We live parallel lives. Anyway, today was Sienna’s birthday party and it was at a bowling alley. There were many times that the ball did not reach the pins. And there were many times that Ashton picked up the ball, walked to the lane, and threw it down the lane by himself. And London’s face looked very similar to Mylie’s every time she threw the ball. Of course it did. But usually her hands were also way up in the air. I guess they can’t be exactly the same all the time.

Gross! I bought a similar kit an Michaels this year. London could hardly contain herself while we were decorating it and it had all these cute icicles that I made, which didn’t even last a day because she kept “snacking” on them. But I threw the nasty thing away when she wasn’t looking and somehow she didn’t even notice and hasn’t said a word about it. She did, however, eat the one she made at school out of graham crackers. It probably tasted a lot better and was more fresh

Your kids are SO cute!!! The water puddle part reminded me of your wedding. All I remember was we were at a big park and we had a bbq. Then afterwards we had a HUGE marshmallow fight with everyone and it started to rain, so it got kind of messy. It was SO fun!!!

Good for her. We have been lucky that our two that did suck fingers or thumbs suffered accidents that cured them without help. Robyn sliced up her finger on a tinfoil container and couldn’t suck through the bandaid and she never sucked her fingers again.

Daisy got some horrible mouth infection/sores and she couldn’t put her thumb in without it hurting and she quit after that. Both of them were a little over one year and I was thrilled that I never had to do anything.

Still,I would like a trip to Disneyland. I’ll have to devise some way to sneak it in.

Don’t worry, Tyler feels the same way. When he writes a post, he gets itching for comments, but often doesn’t get as many as he would like. I wish I could say that it doesn’t matter, but we all know the truth…
I didn’t comment at first, because I have no boys and we don’t play a lot of guns around here, although most of my girls have shot a real gun thanks to Dad. But they save their imaginations for other outlets, like fashion and dancing. It is very girly around here.

Don’t you just love when they stick it to us like that? I’ve yet to bear a child that doesn’t suck on a finger or thumb. Right now I’m trying to get my two and a half year old to quit the thumb. Unfortunately his “blankie” is his belly button so his comfort can’t be limited to bed time. Let me know if you have any pointers for that. Anyway, at least Disney is fun for the whole family! You’ll all have a blast!

2 difference in one day? London was never a thumb sucker, probably because she couldn’t suck. She got the thing in her mouth a few times but it wasn’t soothing. I know that a girl like Mylie could probably easily quit cold turkey, just because she’s that stubborn. I’ll tell you, though, the Disneyland trick didn’t work for potty training for us! But let me know when you’re going! We’ll be more than happy to go with you. You’ll have to do the give a day get a Disney day promotion. Then you’ll only have to pay for Mylie.

It’s so funny to ask kids that question. Last year for father’s day in our ward, the primary made a little book for each dad. Each page was a different question that they asked the kids. It was hilarious! And they also had pictures in it of drawings the kids did of their dads. They asked the kids things like what their dad does at work, how old their dad is, what their dad’s favorite food is, and so on. It was so fun to read all the crazy answers. They even asked the nursery kids.

I loved reading this post. Josh has told me that he wants to be a Garbage man and sleep in the bed in the truck.

Graydon took me to the cemetary the night that he proposed. It was a dark november night and we got their later than planned. He took me to my Mom’s grave. It was sweet, but we both started feeling a little creeped out so we hurried and left. During the day cemetaries can be very interesting, though.

Boys. I don't know how they survive to adulthood.
We have already made two emergency dentist trips for Max. I am not sure any of his baby teeth will fall out naturally. At this point, they are being chipped, bashed, mangled, and broken out at an alarming rate.

P.S. When Sam was little he emptied most of my spice jars all over the carpet in a lovely, aromatic, modern art type of disaster.

Mylie will usually take her clothes off as soon as they get an ounce of water on them. She's also very quick to wash her hands as soon as they get dirty or sticky.

I find Google Reader overwhelming at times. I love all the things I can subscribe to, but if I don't stay on top of things, I come back to find hundreds of posts to catch up on. I've learned to delete the blogs that post too much; it keeps me sane.

I personally think a Jack of all trades is going to get your further with your kids. From what I have read, you seem to have quite a background to draw from and plenty of smarts to implement your schemes. Good luck with it all; motherhood will keep you busy forever it seems.

I think your post is great and I can't believe that you have found over 100 blogs to follow! I get overwhelmed with the few that I follow, lol. I may need to look into the google reader thing.

I think it's important to remember that a blog means something different to each author. I may not "keep it real" per se, but it's just not what my family blog is to me. I hope others don't read it and think that I am bragging or am high and mighty. I just don't feel like sharing every time my kid pees his pants or throws a tantrum etc. I'll share those treasures/frustrations with Derrick…poor guy!

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the preschool setup. I was imagining how I wouldn't have done anything even close to that. Read my blog, and you will always feel better. But really, I feel like so many moms pretend on their blogs like they have no problems and that all they do all day long is laugh joyously and craft with their kids. It's all about keeping it real I say. You are great, and don't compare yourself to what may not even be those people's day to day reality. Oh… I read free range parenting and really liked it a lot. A couple of issues with… but I do with every parenting book. Di did you read the article in Time in November on "Helicopter Parenting?" My baby class discussed it this last week, and it was interesting! Man, it is really time for us to get together!!!

Karli, I stand in awe of you. I was driving by your house yesterday thinking about all the things you do, activities you're involved in, your theater program, teaching Mylie's preschool, etc, and I was amazed by you. I don't know how you find the time and the creativity to do all that you do, but it amazes me and I wish I could do it too. So, since I feel like a slacker mom most of the time I'm glad to know that someone I look so as a "super-mom" feels lacking in some respects. Thanks for sharing your real thoughts and feelings. The other thing you should realize, and I know you already do but it's easy to forget, is when we look at other people and what they do well we want to do what everyone else is doing well.....which is more than one person. What I'm trying to say is - does the super coupon girl also do crafts with her kids and be ace of cakes and make gourmet dinners from scratch etc etc? You are looking at so many people and taking the one thing they do well and expecting yourself to do multiple people's one talent....

You are exceptionally talented Karli and I read your blog and I hope that someday when I have kids I will be a mom like you. Honestly. Because you're a real mom with real days and you're very honest about the goods and the bads and the in betweens. I and ADORE that.

Great job! It looks like that pre-school is a winner! We opted this year for the adult ed preschool with London. It's super cheap and it's taught by a very qualified teacher. The catch is, it's 3 days a week and I have to be there for 2 of them. One day I stay in the classroom and the other day I volunteer at the school. My job is in the daycare where parents who are volunteering in the classroom or at the school can drop their kids off for a couple of hours. We love it and I'm definitely involved in London's education. But I don't have to teach it every couple of months. (I do have to teach a craft, however.)

I opted to do much of the same thing this year, except it is pre-school and much more relaxed with no curriculum (read: I wish someone else had planned lessons for me). This is my week to teach and it always stresses me out (I did NOT take the early education major for a reason).
I however, knew going in that my one-year old would be a holy terror, so I always ship her out.

I'm officially so glad I live in Utah....

Yeah, I'm sure this kind of thing must happen here too (people being overly critical of how parents raise their kids, cars, all of that), but it doesn't seem to happen nearly as much (probably because all the would be tattle-tale mommies are just as busy in a store somewhere with their kids in the car too).

I think we live in a much safer time. Heck, I remember riding with my parents in a car with my head hanging out the window...when I was 3! Car seats? What were those? We used to get stuck waiting in the car all the time while "mom went in to grab something"...but we weren't stupid, if it got hot in the car we'd open a window.

Gotta love today's world for raising kids. Makes me glad I'm in Utah. I sure as heck would hate raising kids in Oregon.

Two years in Oregon watching how stuff there was done was enough to cure me. I'll keep my Utah.

We've had this conversation before. I agree. I know I'm more of a mother hen than you are but really as a mother of three young children I would appreciate it a whole lot more if someone would offer to help me rather than accuse me.

I'm terrified that the neighbors in our apartment complex are going to turn us into CPS when Madilyn throws a grand mall tantrum. And I'll admit I'm terrified to let her walk to the bus stop by herself because of the kilt man who lives two doors down.

I people need to offer to help before they judge or offer annoying advice.

My parents, who are both 80 now, told me a number of years back how sad it made them that they couldn't really stop and talk to little kids anymore without people thinking they were pervs or abductors. They didn't live by their grandkiddies at the time and so it was really fun for them to watch little kids and talk to them a bit. They had to quit doing it. Paul and I now have no kids at home and all of our grandkiddies live away from us.

We moved to the top of a mountain last year and have virtually no neighbors and certainly not a trick or treater within 5 miles. Last Halloween we found ourselves driving around the Pacific Terrace area to just look at the little kids trick or treating. We worried about being reported! For reals.

I think that this is in the same vein as being 'politically correct' all of the time. I am so tired of walking on eggshells (forgive the pun)

Brandy - I would agree, that the risk of injury is serious. I won't let Nolan outside for a second because he has absolutely no street awareness. And if they had friends across the street, I would also be concerned about the crossing. That is a very real danger and concern. We, however, live on a busy enough street that Mylie knows how dangerous it is, and knows that her boundaries are simply our driveway and the sidewalk. I've watched her enough when she doesn't know I am to believe that she stays in those boundaries quite well. And, we don't have any little kids around to tempt her to cross.

Shannon - I will definitely check out that book! Thanks!

Kiersten - I remember that post. I almost cried for you. I totally felt your pain.

Kara - yes, that would be a difficult judgment call. I do think that Oregon law says that 20 minutes or over is endangerment. And I also agree that people are trying to be helpful when they're waiting by the car. When people have stopped at my house when Mylie's out riding her bike (to tell me that she's out there by herself) I politely thank them for watching out for her, and tell them that she's allowed to do it. I know they're trying to be helpful. However, I think it would do us all to reconsider our reactions to such parents... instead of simply saying "they arrest parents for that!" Or the people who called the cops on you could have come over to see if there was anything they could do to help. Oh, and I listened to the radio show - it's excellent!!

Margene - I've never lived outside Oregon with children (at least not since Mylie was 1). It would be interesting to see how it varies from state to state. However, I will say that there are some crazy crazy articles on Lenore's blog that come from ALL OVER the country. (and P.S. is your departure imminent? That would be a sad day!)

Bonnie - what a scary situation! I'm glad there were people there to help!! I do think it's all about training your kids, and giving them increasing responsibility in baby steps. For example, some kids would be ready to be home alone at 8. Others, probably not till closer to 18. That's why I think making laws about certain ages is a bad idea. It allows some parents to leave kids who aren't ready, and inhibits others.

I agree 100%. (I had to read your blog on this topic!!) I have always believed that our children need space to breathe and the freedom to make their own decisions in order to grow into successful, confident, intelligent adults.

Ryan always wants to return the cart now. (He's almost 6.) So we had the parking lot safety talk AGAIN and I usually put Elaina in her seat and then watch him as he dashes to put it away. I am no stranger to leaving them in the car ALONE (God forbid) for a few minutes if I can see them. It's so much easier than pulling both kids out of the car to run into the dry cleaner's to drop off a shirt. Seriously. I remember waiting, patiently, for my mom to run into various businesses for a few minutes also. We were fine. (I know DHS would probably disagree, though.)

Actually, there was one incident a few years ago that really freaked me out. And then I came to know how safe my community really can be. I was at Home Depot, strapping Ryan into his car seat...I think he was about 2. He took my keys, hit the lock button, and threw them over the seat. I shut the door without thinking...oops! At it was at least 90 degrees! With ALL the windows up. I stopped for a second, and then ran into the store to call 911 to see if Mike was anywhere close to let me get the kid out of the hot car. This was when he still was a sheriff's deputy, so he was in Bly. But I found out that the towing companies do it for free when there's a kid involved, and the guy was very nice and FAST. When I'd come out of the store there was an elderly couple talking to Ryan through the windows. They didn't talk down to me; they said they'd seen the whole thing and were just keeping him company. Most people are pretty understanding, I think. Did you ever find your purse? That would totally stink. We all make our mistakes....

I agree with you on this! This is a big thing in Oregon. I have had SO many encounters with people feeling they are doing such a good duty "defending" my child from irresponsible me... I'm sure they walked away patting themselves on their back. When in reality, they just made a overwhelmed young mother more discouraged and paranoid, and proved themselves an insensitive, judgmental accuser!

Whatever happened to offering a helping hand vs. accusing of abuse. This NEVER happen when we lived in Utah. (Where most people actually UNDERSTAND raising children).

I had the same experience watching my kids from inside a building for like 2 minutes and when I came out - it was a man on the phone by my vehicle with the police. Then I had to talk to the police and give a report. They told me that it's not considered neglect unless you leave your kids longer than 20 minutes. Hmmm.... 2 minutes was close, I tell ya (in a locked car that I had in my view the whole time!)

I believe in Mother's intuition. I believe we have the ability to receive inspiration for our own children that SUPERSEDES what government, strangers, and by standers may think. And honestly, I believe there are too many Mother Hen's watching other peoples kids WITHOUT true insight, or compassion involved, but the anticipation of "catching" someone begin abused or neglected.

Yes, abuse really happens, and there are parents out there that are truly neglectful... but in the scare of trying to find the abusers, it's sad to see it become more like a witch hunt!

Of all the things I love about Oregon, this is probably one of the biggest things I will not miss when we do eventually move!!

I am mixed about this. I totally agree with many of your points and the idea in general. To the credit of some people who are waiting at cars to give lectures to mamas, they do have no idea the length of time that the kids have been left. As a mandated reporter, I feel very confused as what would constitute neglect….. as certainly your situations were not neglectful at all. I definitely am not a hovering mom compared to many of my friends, and I feel like I am good at letting them explore…… but like I said before, I am mixed on the being left in the car thing.
So… I guess I will sum up by saying….I think you are a great parent and would never doubt that, but a stranger who doesn't know your situation, capabilities, or motives may not. That is how I attempted to look at it in regards to the person who called the cops on me a few months back. All they heard was crying in our house and obviously everything was fine….. but they didn't know us and what kind of people we are…. but it was annoying still.
Oh, and I actually have "Last Child in the Woods" on hold at library, so I am excited to read that one!!

Amen sista! I don't know why people think they have the right to tell us how to parent our children. I blogged once about a guy who told me I should call super nanny because my then 3 year old was throwing a fit in the store. And Taylor once blogged about someone who razzed him about stealing back his stolen bike. Nobody understands YOUR situation like you do. And you have the right to parent your child however the heck you want.

There's a book, Last Child in the Woods that talks about some of the same issues. Mainly how we're depriving our children of nature because people today are so fearful of what could happen. The author writes about the same stats too… it's very rare that a child is kidnapped, yet it's probably one of the biggest fears of parents. Very interesting post Karli . I've felt the same way many times… strange since when Anna was a baby I was completely the neurotic parent who couldn't take my eyes off her for a second. I think as our children grow, our parenting styles grow with them. There's definately a balance between safety and common sense.

That was very interesting! I was amazed that the stats are actually better today than they were before….but I still have issues with my kids playing outside unless I am watching them with my eagle eye. I am more worried about them crossing the street back and forth to their friend's house than getting kidnapped. And as far as having your kids walk behind you in Target? Seriously, someone approached you about that? That's nuts. It's more likely they'll catch a disease from holding onto the nasty shopping cart the whole time.

I really HOPE we're not twins! It sounds like you've been busy. I will tell you, however, that I will never have another garage sale. Rest assured you are a wonderful mom. When they have their own children they will call and apologize for ever being a kid. I apologize to my own mother regularly. Besides just give them ice cream for supper and you’ll suddenly be the most amazing parents in the world. It works. Trust me.

I win! Sam was the worst baby in history. He cried round the clock 45 minutes out of 60 – no, he screamed. One night I called our pediatrition at midnight and stuck the phone in Sam’s little face and made the doc listen. I got back on the phone and he said, put him on the opposite side of the house. We did. He screamed hard all night. Finally we rescued him at about 7am. He was so fevered that we ran him to the ER. He had strep throat. Now, I’m not sure why he screamed the other 10 months and 29 days, but that night, the one night we chose to ignore him, he had strep. Bad doobie mom………..

What a refreshing post. Last night I went in to check on the boys before going to bed and I smelled the dredded smell. I noticed Dallin sitting up in his bed in the dark. “Mom, I spit up!” GREAT. He had done it in his sleep! How on earth, it MUST be a kid thing. Anyways, too much popcorn at the theater was to blame for that. You guys are FANTASTIC parents! I love seeing your posts! I know this phrase is overused, but… if that is the worst that ever happens (on a car trip), you can count yourself as getting off pretty easy. Gilbert has told me absolute horror stories of him and his 5 other young siblings during 3 day road trips with his folks. (Think contagious instant projectile vomiting!) I don’t know how parents survive sometimes. I wouldn’t call you a “worst parent”. I would call you a survivor.

That so stinks!! Don’t you wish they had readouts on their heads or something. You never know if/when you should worry/intervene and you certainly get tired of guessing. Roadtrips are the absolute worst place to have issues since you can’t even hold them. I’m glad you got through safely and at least you can say he felt better after throwing up since he slept and was happy afterwards. Sorry

Sounds like a typical day in the life of Mom. Josh has done the bare butt thing to me, but we were at my in-laws and he was standing in the middle of the kitchen.

I love the shovel solution. It sounds like something I would have done. I once got the brilliant idea to use a hatchet and cut a huge limb off one of our trees during Josh's nap. I ended up asking my neighbor to help me since the limb was larger than I had thought.

We just make due with what we have. Maybe you can get a back rub for the sore muscles that are to come.

Happy Birthday little Nolan! The first year goes by way too fast =]. I completely agree with your parenting observations . Anna and Ethan are very different children too. Anna slept through the night early on too, but Ethan had other ideas. He was 11 months before he slept through the night consistently. I love seeing the different personalities.

This reminds me of a time I was in Oregon during the winter (I served my mission in that awesome state).

It was 1993 and I was in Astoria, which was my first area with my "training" companion, who also happened to be from my hometown (I know, go figure).

One Sunday morning we woke up to about an 1" of snow on the ground....so what did we do? Got in the car & drove to church! Of course!

When we got there, no one was there & we couldn't figure out why.

We called the bishop to see what was going on, "Oh, Elders, it snowed today! We've cancelled church."

After telling the bishop that, "Well, we're here, what's the problem" and him explaining that snow was trecherous, we both had a great laugh.

You see, we were two kids who'd grown up around snow all our lives and learned to drive in it as well. We thought it was so funny that they'd cancelled church for....SNOW!...I mean, there wasn't even a full inch of snow on the ground!

I still get a kick out of how most of Portland closes down when the white stuff falls.

But it sounds like you guy's had a nice relaxing afternoon...

Even we got a call that your ward meetings had been cancelled. I guess someone forgot we had moved. Ours were …on and I was here alone with all 3 kids and had to sing in the choir…. When we came out after our 3 house block there was at least 4 inches of snow on the cars, but it was awesome dry powder that I had only heard of before. Good thing I have 4 wheel drive.

Yikes, you might as well go to Chuck E Cheese and go on two rides, although that place causes head-aches, lol. They have a chain of grocery super stores out here called “Meijers”. I hadn’t ever heard of them on the west coast, but they have their horse rides for a penny! 2 cents and the kids are happy. Wish more stores did that. Sometimes we go there instead of Target to get something because the boys want a “horsie” ride.

Great answers Karli! I miss Alias! A lot of my favorite shows aren’t on anymore either. I got into the Gilmore Girl phase late in the game. I have seasons 1-6 on DVD and just recently finished 6. Took over a year to get through them. Now onto the last season…and I’m sure a disappointment in the story line, lol.

I also believe that McCain comes across as a little strange, awkward, and perhaps out of touch. However, I do think that Sarah Palin is one of the most “in touch” with reality candidates out there. She gets made fun of a lot, and I think they’ve made a mistake in giving her wrote memorization to put forth, but when you really listen to her, she is so much like any one of us. And that’s way refreshing to me. McCain, I believe, isn’t that out of touch, but does have a hard time communicating (and another term of a bad communicator isn’t something I particularly look forward to). However, I do think that spending years in a prison torture camp puts one quite a bit closer to being in touch with reality than anything Obama has ever experienced. He was raised pretty middle class, attended an Ivy League college and has pretty much had life much easier than he would like us to believe. When I hear stories about what McCain went through, I am amazed by the man’s character and pray that no one in my family ever has to go through anything like that. Thanks for the comment!

That’s a great comment, Anonymous! I guess my response would be that Christ loved those he served, and worked to make them better. He told them to go and sin no more. Obama’s friendships with people of questionable character have not been in this fashion. Instead of serving them, they often serve him and his purposes. Nor have they changed their ways. Bill Ayers was responsible for the deaths of innocent people, and says he thinks he didn’t do enough. I don’t believe Obama’s relationship with him has helped him come to God or to feel sore repentance, nor do I believe Obama has tried to do this. I believe Obama’s relationship with Tony Rezko was for each other’s own gain, and not for the building up of the kingdom. Christ loved the sinner, but hated the sin, and I have yet to see anything in Obama’s character that really proves to me that he hates the sin, or even is not somewhat entangled in it. But thanks again for the thought. It reminded me that I need to take seriously who and how I judge. In Doctrine and Covenants 11:12, it says, “And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good – yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit” (emphasis added). So we do need to make judgments about people’s characters, but we need to do with careful thought and consideration, with deference to the Spirit of Christ.

Very well stated. I just listened to a 2001 audio clip of Obama in an interview discussing the distribution of wealth. This seems to fit in with this section. I can give you a link if you'd like. I just was amazed and it continues to concern me. I am against nationalized health care. To me, it is a stepping stone to socialism. Many financial policies which Obama has suggested are, to me, socialism. That is not what I want in this country.

I think the words “Pro-Choice” are misleading. We always have a choice. If it infringes on another person’s right to life, then it should be ILLEGAL. A person can still choose abortion but if it’s under a situation of inconvience, it should be illegal, because it infringes on the right of anther person to live. We could say we’re pro-murder, pro-rape, or whatever… a person can always choose to do those things. What I’m talking about is how we determine what is legal or illegal and therefore punishable through the law of the land. Maybe Pro-life could also be stated as Pro-consequence, or pro-justice, or something similar that shows the act of taking responsibility for ones actions.

I can’t say that I totally and completely agree with everything you’ve said, but I love reading your opinions and they have helped me form mine. For what it’s worth, I’m leaning toward McCain. I think my biggest problem with him is that he seems so out of touch with reality. Hi there! My friend sent me your website link so I could check out your arguments against Obama as president. I want to tell you first that I appreciate your willingness to talk about these issues and second (and perhaps most important) that I commend your research on these topics. You make very compelling arguments and I can only wish that more people would be as thorough in their research of the most important matters. I agree with you wholeheartedly with regard to each of your arguments and would like to add my thoughts on same-sex marriage, being right here in the thick of it. What’s sad is that so many people here in California believe that those who support Prop 8 are haters and discriminators. They believe it is our desire to strip homosexuals of rights when in reality they have all the same rights, under the title of civil unions/domestic partnerships, that traditional marriages have. There is not one thing with regard to insurance, child rearing, etc. that is different between a same-sex domestic partnership and a heterosexual marriage. What the homosexual community wants is to procure the word “marriage” as an important step in its fight to normalize homosexuality. They would like to remove the stigma of homosexuality by forcing it to be accepted under the guise of equal rights/civil rights. By legalizing same-sex marriage, it is then put on equal footing with traditional marriage and would then be required to be taught in schools right alongside traditional marriage. This has already happened in Massachusetts. Anyway, I don’t know where you and your family live and you are so well-read that you probably already know all this, but I wanted to concur and apparently I have to write a book to do that! I’m a bit verbose. Well, thanks! I hope you don’t mind that I’ve added a link to your arguments on my political blog.

Too funny! I had that same experience the other day but was is the grocery store and so I had to leave the cart outside. I also love knowing that another mother struggles with getting info out of her kids. Here’s an example of mine…One day I got a call from a parent telling me that they saw Nathan had a little tiff with a kid at school and he might be sad when he came home. When he got home I casually asked how his day went…he said, “good”. I asked how recess was…he said, “good”. I asked if anyone bugged him at recess…he said, “nope..it was good”…hmmmm….come on kid!!! Finally I said that I heard someone was mean to him….he just looked at me and….his response was….”nope, it was good” Can you believe that???? Argh!!!

I am truly undecided…as is Ryan. It basically breaks down for ME like this:
McCain: Comes off as creepy, don’t like him personally, agree with politics for the most part.
Obama: Very charismatic and likeable, don’t agree with politics.
I feel totally torn. I have a hard time voting for someone that I have no personal regard for, but on the same hand have a hard time voting for someone whose policies I disagree with.

I totally agree with you on the point that debates don’t do much to educate people. I mean, sometimes when the two politicians really have different points of view – the debate shows us those differences. And then people can see clearly the decision they are being asked to make – and the two options before them. So for example, there was the question about health care and whether it is a right, responsibility or privilege. McCain said “responsibility” and Obama said “right”. Or with their tax policies – I think both acknowledge that the other person’s position differs from their own.

But mostly, it’s as you said, there’s so much other garbage to wade through to get to the issues. I just tune out when they start talking about their cronies and earmarks and pork barrelling. Maybe I just don’t understand what they’re talking about (ok, I don’t most of the time). And while a person’s character is important. I find that most of the time, all this effort to try to characterize your opponent as this or that kind of a man, just confuses me. To put it simply, I guess I just prefer a debate about policy issues rather than character.

Kiersten – thanks for sharing! The political bantering does get really annoying and highly frustrating. It’s hard to wade through all the garbage. I’m starting to feel like the debates, though amusing to me, aren’t really worth anything. Neither are political ads. I think they only send people who have already chosen a side further into one camp or the other. They really don’t do anything to educate people who are trying to make the decision.

Nicole, Yes, I did notice McCain talking down to Obama. I’m pretty sure it was to counteract Obama’s billion attempts to tie him to President Bush. It’s definitely something they’ve both been coached to do, because if this election is about Bush, then Obama wins hands down. And if the election is about experience and international issues, then McCain wins. So I think they’ve both been told to look for any opportunity to drive the conversation that way. Unfortunately, neither are very good at it, and it’s rather transparent. I sure wish they would just answer the actual question instead!

We had to TiVo the debate and watch it later due to conflicts. I think that worked to our advantage as we got so irritated with the debate that we started forwarding through some of the more repetative tripe (Iraq War blame game). I totally understand your frustration with the guys not answering the questions, too. Gilbert felt like McCain was very condescending towards Obama. I think he said, …”what Senator Obama doesn’t seem to understand…” about 20 times. Annoying. I thought Obama was fairly timid, but polished. I agree, Round 1 to Obama. I am VERY interested to hear more about both of thier economic plans next time.

We have the same problems here =]. I’m glad to hear you struggle with the working/stay home dilema too. I went back part-time when I was pregnant and it’s been a challenge. Childcare costs are rediculous. Anna and Mylie sound so similar! We still have potty issues too. Good times.

Thanks for all the supportive comments! A little clarification – I’m talking about how the age 3 is harder than the terrible twos. Not the number of kids, although right now 2 is definitely enough for me to handle!

I guess I can chime in here and say 4 kids is way way way harder than 3!! But I don’t think that’s exactly true. It DOES get easier as they get older as far as all the physical demands and screaming. It gets more difficult emotionally. But it is all so wonderful! The rewards from being a mom don’t come right away like in the work force. But they WILL come and it WILL be way better than a paycheck and praise. I admire your wisdom and courage, Karli!!

Good for you! I felt your pull. You really do articulate and explain things well…talented!! I actually did the same thing a few years ago. I applied, got hired…but then I said no. Mine was tied to the kids being in school and I thought, I’ve got all this time while they’re in school…they don’t really need me anymore…not the case!! I am soooo grateful that I didn’t take the job!
Oh yeah….who’s telling you that 3 kids is not harder than 2!?!?! Hmmm… I’ve heard it though that once you have 3 then adding more isn’t a killer…but going from 2 to 3 is a KILLER Hmmmm…Is there something Lisa knows that I don’t Have fun!

Hey Karli,
I just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, Kite Runner, and 3 Cups of Tea. After having a lot of time to ponder, I have been amazed to think about how little my life has been impacted by everything going on in the world. There are bombs going off in Afghanistan, but I now have to pay $.79 a pound for bananas instead of $.59. Big deal. I am trying to stay positive about these changes, because it seems like it will not be getting better in the immediate future.

Amen sista! Don’t get me wrong, I love my luxuries, but our generation has never known it “hard” like our parents or grandparents economically. Right before we left Ryan and I went out to dinner as a farewell of sorts at a fairly expensive resturant that was absolutely jam packed. Later we went to the mall to pick up the few remaining things on our to-do list and couldn’t find a parking spot. Ryan looked at me and said, “Funny, I thought the economy was struggling right now.” Although there may be a bit more to the Fannie May/Freddie Mac deal that what is on the surface (it has been on the news here) I’m definitely not for government bail-outs. Whew! How’s that for a comment?!

Good luck! I know I don’t have 2 kids but I have flown a few times alone with London and I still use my front carrier for her while going through security. It has no metal so I can keep her strapped to me without the pain of trying to get her out of a stroller, fold it up, take everythin else out, you know. Some security people will tell you that you have to take it off but just tell them that so and so said you could leave it on. Because one guy in security told me once (after I had taken it all of and everything) that I should have just left it on. So maybe you could put Nolan in a front pack or sling and make Mylie walk. I don’t know how that will be. Or just push the stroller with Mylie so you can have room for all of your stuff (including her car seat). London does SO much better on the plane when she’s sitting in her car seat instead of the seat on the plane. It’s a little more of a pain to get it there, but the flight is so much easier without her trying to get up and run around. But, like I said, I’ve never done it with two kids. So good luck. I am jealous! It has been a long time since my boys have listened to the Wiggles, and I have not yet introduced them to Olivia. (What neglect!) There was a time when we were quite the fanatics. In fact, Mike and I went up to the U2 concert in Seattle a couple years ago, and the Wiggles happened to be in town that weekend too. Well, down in the VIP section of the concert, who did I see? Murray! I was more interested in watching him watch the concert. Crazy fun! What a fun memory for Mylie!

Oh, Karli, this would have been a dream come true for London. We borrowed a Wiggles movie from the library once, and now there’s no turning back. She would watch them all day, every day if I let her. (She’s limited to one movie a day). And every week when we go to the library, she wants to choose a new Wiggles movie. Boy would she be jealous of Mylie.

Wow! She did a great job! London had a disposable camera at Brittany’s wedding. I wonder how those pictures turned out. She just uses my old broken camera now and wonders why the pictures never show up on the screen. She and Mylie are so much alike! As soon as I take ANY pictures I hear, “London see pictures now?”

I am SO with you. London is exactly the same. She knows all of the thousands of rewards she’ll get “someday” when she’s potty trained. But it’s not enough. I tried the big girl panties the other day and she didn’t even care when she wet them. At least she loves to sit on the potty. That’s the one thing I have going for us! Good luck, and keep us updated on any successes you’re having.

We hope our kids are as cute as yours!!! I can not believe what Mylie can do on the computer, we thought Jason was amazing that he knew how to put in a computer disk and play the game. Now, she is dragging and googling? Scary!! Keep those restictions on tight. You’re lucky you and Nick know so much about computers that you can do that.
